In Sanskrit the word Asana translates to seat or posture. Each day my desire is to bring my physical body into alignment with my smooth steady breath thus finding a position which comforts my soul.

When I sit slouched for a long duration I am doing an injustice to my physical body. As I type away on my computer or drive for long periods I feel my body rebel with tightness and sometimes pain. The tension I feel in my neck, shoulders and back is a familiar sensation. The best part about this familiarity is I have the antidote.

My cure is my Yogic tool box. Reaching into my Yogic tool box helps to fix that which causes me dis-ease.

My Yogic Tool Box contains: Patañjali’s Eight-Limb Path of Yoga.

ASANA is the third-limb of the ancient teachings of Patañjali.

The wonderful thing about the having these yogic tools is you can access them anytime and anywhere. The tools are innate inside each one of us. All you need to do is ‘Believe’ and ‘Practice’ to become proficient at utilizing the teachings.

It’s not necessary for every person to be able to do a handstand or a backbend in a physical Asana practice to be comfortable.

Practice in a way which makes you feel comfortable.

We have the answers inside of us to find relief from poor posture. Sometimes all you need is a simple reminder. For example, if you realize that your in pain from sitting for long periods of time then simply change your position. Try going outside and walking slowly until your body starts to feel alive and free of pain.

One movement that helps me is to stand firmly on the ground and reach my arms up high above my head. I like to pretend that I am taking a hold of a cloud or a sun ray. Then I bring my hands together at heart center and pray, ‘Spirit, help me to take the best next step which brings me closer to my Divine Purpose.‘

Everyone is unique thus different yoga postures and movement work for different people. Some people may want to get outside and hike or do a powerful yoga practice. While others may want to experience a calm quiet Yin like practice.

Last week I needed to calm my mind and I chose to move through a cooling Asana or Yin practice.

Yin is a physical yoga practice which honors longer postural holds (2-6 minutes). This practice can help a person open up their fascia and release muscle tightness. If you’re new to a Yin yoga practice be sure to get instruction from a teacher with experience.

Each day I practice combining Patañjali’s first and second limbs (Yamas and Niyamas) with a comfortable Asana (third-limb) and a smooth slow breath -Pranayama (fourth-limb) to bring me to a place of serenity.
