The Eight-Limb Path of Yoga is embedded in Patañjali’s ancient teachings of the Yoga Sutras.
As we continue to practice Patañjali’s Eight-Limbs of Yoga we pause at Aparigraha.
Aparigraha is the fifth principle underneath the first Limb known as Yamas.
One translation of Aparigraha is non-possessiveness.
In June, of 2019 I relocated from Arizona to Portland Oregon. It was necessary for me to
to look at the logistics of my drive out to the Northwest. First, I consider that I would be traveling with two canine companions, Gus and Cindy and eventually we’d rendezvous with my spiritual partner George.
Soon the four of us were packed into a mid-size car to make the long journey. Thus, I only had a small space for my personal ‘stuff.’
I AM Grateful that I was able to ‘Purge’ or ‘Let-Go’ of ‘my possessions’ in Arizona.
When I had sold or donated most every household or personal item I truly felt free. Free of being weighted down with items that were no longer serving my soul.
I have a question for you (the reader); when was the last time you looked inside a box or closet at items you no longer use? Have you thought about ‘Letting-Go’ of the material items that no longer nourish your soul?
I’ve recognized Aparigraha can refer to other things besides material items. For me I have clung to the ideas of; status, memories, emotions, outcomes, expectations and my list of ideas to cling too goes on and on.
Last week I made a commitment to myself; to dedicate time to a daily Asana (Patañjali’s 3rd Limb-Seat our Posture) home yoga practice.
I had hopes or expectations of wanting to be in an apex posture of Adho Mukha Savasana-Downward Facing Tree (Handstand) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downward_Dog_Pose for at least five smooth breaths. For me when I feel comfortable in a posture it becomes meditative (brings me closer to my Spirit) and I like that feeling.
I remembered to begin my physical Asana practice by honoring the principle of Aparigraha. Therefore, I released and ‘Let-Go’ of my expectation for wanting to achieve a handstand. I reminded myself it’s not about getting to the summit (or yoga pose) but for me it’s about moving through the practice and FEELING the ‘Present Moment’ by connecting to my highest-Self/Spirit.
Yesterday during my Asana practice I was able to meditatively move into Adho Mukha Savasana-Handstand (if only for one sweet breath).
So, I go back to practicing not just one of Patañjali’s limbs but practicing all eight of the limbs.
Here’s to Practice.
